Dr. Maria E. Castillejos is a reknowned Retina and Vitreous Surgeon who has been practicing in San Diego since 1982. She graduated from Harvard Mass. Eye & Ear specializing in Retina and Vitreous Disease and Surgery.

She is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology as well as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Distinguished member of the local medical society.

Her specialty in Retina & Vitreous lends itself to qualifed care of Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Retina Detachments as well as Vitreous Hemorrhages, disease and surgery of the Retina.
(Currently Dr. Castillejos is conducting FDA trials of a investigational drug for the clearing of Vitreous Hemorrhage.)

Type of retina and vitreous diseases:

In diabetic retinopathy abnormal blood vessels grow associated with bleeding and scarring that ultimatly can destroy the eye.

Diabetic Retinopathy:
The leading cause of Blindness in the United States.
A yearly exan by an ophthalmologist is recommended for the Diabetic patient.
Retinal Detachment:
The sensory layer of the retina has become detached from its wall due to a break on the retina or traction. Patients may experience persistent flashing lights, floaters or cobwebs.
Patients should contact their ophthalmologist if any of these symptoms are present and request a dilated fundus exam.
Macular Degeneration:
Under the gross of the normal vessel of the retina usually of fluid or loss of pigmentation in the drytype patient has difficult to reading letters may appear missing or distorted. In examination by an oftalmologist should be obtain at the initial onset of the sympthon and additional studies like fluoresceina undergram should be performed.

New treatment are now available for some of these forms of Macular Negeneration with the new and nati vsoprolitrative aggents with can help to reduce the degree of visual loss.
