Dr. Maria E. Castillejos is a reknowned Retina and Vitreous Surgeon who has been practicing in San Diego since 1982. She graduated from Harvard Mass. Eye & Ear specializing in Retina and Vitreous Disease and Surgery.

She is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology as well as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Distinguished member of the local medical society.

Her specialty in Retina & Vitreous lends itself to qualifed care of Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Retina Detachments as well as Vitreous Hemorrhages, disease and surgery of the Retina.

Type of retina and vitreous diseases:

In diabetic retinopathy abnormal blood vessels grow associated with bleeding and scarring that ultimatly can destroy the eye.

The leading cause of Blindness in the United States.
A yearly exan by an ophthalmologist is recommended for the Diabetic patient.

Retinal Detachment:
The sensory layer of the retina has become detached from its wall due to a break on the retina or traction. Patients may experience persistent flashing lights, floaters or cobwebs. Patients should contact their ophthalmologist if any of these symptoms are present and request a dilated fundus exam.

Macular Degeneration:
